Paris is in the spotlight with the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Olympic Village, located in Saint-Denis, is becoming the nerve centre of this excitement, welcoming athletes from all over the world. Sammode, a French lighting designer and manufacturer for nearly a century, is proud to be lighting part of the Village! In particular, we took part in the transformation of the former RATP electricity substation into a multifunctional space for the athletes.

Once home to the electrical installations for the Paris metro, the Halle Maxwell was completely refurbished for the Olympic Games. This imposing building (220 metres long, 22 metres wide and 15 metres high!) now houses fitness rooms, an information centre and offices for the delegations. The new buildings connected to the Hall house the athletes' accommodation.
However, after the Games, the building will eventually house almost 2,500 Home Office staff. Maxwell Hall will be an integral part of the Universeine district, offering 79,000 m² of housing, 63,000 m² of offices, as well as shops, a crèche and a medical centre. The complexity of this project lies in its dual purpose: firstly Olympic, then tertiary. All in less than a year after the end of the Olympic Games.
This ambitious conversion presents challenges in terms of compliance with standards, particularly with regard to fire safety. Sammode luminaires, known for their robustness and versatility, are designed to meet the needs of this type of complex project.
Sammode installed around 300 luminaires in two areas of the Olympic Village. The Elgar and Scorel models were placed as wall and ceiling lights respectively in the superstructure staircases, providing functional and comfortable lighting. The Purcell model, meanwhile, illuminates the great heights of the Maxwell Hall, providing diffused, homogeneous light.
These luminaires have been chosen for their elegant design, robustness and durability. Lighting that is just as suited to today's sports facilities as it is to future workspaces. This flexibility is essential to ensure that the building can continue to evolve throughout its life.

This project to refurbish Maxwell Hall is part of a drive to enhance the 20th century's industrial heritage and promote innovation. It also pursues ambitious sustainability objectives, aimed at promoting more environmentally-friendly Olympic Games. This includes reducing carbon impact, using materials from the circular economy, and a sustainable urban regeneration approach.
These values of scalability, sustainability and reusability resonate deeply with Sammode's DNA. By participating in this project, we are affirming our commitment to forward-looking lighting solutions. We are proud to contribute (in our small way) to promoting French innovation internationally... Particularly at this time of sporting celebration when the eyes of the world are on the French capital!
